The Palm Pixi Is An Impressive Handset
The Palm Pixi offers an alternative to the more established manufactures’ offerings. A versatile handset, the Pixi offers touch screen technology, Qwerty keyboard, internet access and a digital camera.
Announced in September 2009, the Pixi measures 111x55x10.9mm. It’s slim profile and light weight of 99.5 grams makes it a comfortable handset to hold and use on the go. The 2.63 inch TFT capacitive touch screen display all 256,000 colours in 320×400 pixels for good quality on screen display. A full Qwerty keyboard offers a convenient and efficient means of entering text and numbers. An accelerometer sensor rotates the on screen content based on the orientation of the phone, meaning it can be viewed in landscape as well as portrait.
Along with the standard vibration, downloadable polyphonics and MP3 ringtones allow customisation of the handset whilst alerting to incoming calls or messages. For communicating hands free, a speakerphone system is installed which is convenient for talking whilst carrying out tasks such as driving. As an alternative, a 3.5mm audio jack can be used for more traditional hands free headsets as well as earphones for listening to music stored on the phone.
For storage of data such as media files, an impressive 8GB of internal storage is available. Whilst it may not feature a micro SD slot like many other modern phones, 8 GB is certainly ample for the needs of most users.
In order to keep the phone connected to networks, EDGE and GPRS cater to this function. HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps offer connection in areas where 3G coverage is available. For sharing data such as music files with friends (provided they have a compatible handset and are in the same vicinity), Bluetooth v2.1 is installed as standard. Micro USB (v2.0) offers a means to connect the phone to a computer in order to carry out tasks such as back up and transfer data such as contact info and media files.
The Palm Pixi features a 2MP (1600×1200) digital camera offering a means to take reasonably good quality snapshots. In low lighting conditions, a useful flash can be utilised to improve the quality of the photograph.
The operating system of choice is PalmWeb OS which works in conjunction with a Qualcomm 600MHz processor to ensure that all tasks carried out by the phone are done so in a fast and smooth fashion.
With its versatility, the Palm Pixi offers a sound alternative to those looking for something different.
