nokia 6280 3G ? please explain?

i have just got a new nokia 6280 on vodafone network
can someone explain to me what 3G is as im all new to this i been using my old sony ericsson k700i for the last 2 years but now have this new nokia what does 3g mean and how do i upload some good ringtones

If you think back to the mid 80s when phones were first available, they were first generation technology (known in the industry as TACS – Total Access Communication System), in the early 90′s 2nd generation (2G) was introduced which you will know as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), it gave security advantages, was more reliable and was the technology that brought mobiles to the masses. In the late 90s saw basic data browsing via WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) which was followed by GPRS (General Packet Radio System) for browsing at a greater speed.

In 2000 there was an auction for licenses to operate a UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network, the accronym 3G or third generation was quickly adopted for the technology an it gives you the ability to download at speeds up to 384kb/s, make video calls, better speech quality through more advanced encryption methods to name a few of the advantages.

As for downloading ringtones, have a look on Vodafone Live! in the music section, there are thousands of ringtones available and also full track downloads so you can use your phone like an MP3 player. If you can’t find anything there it is possible to transfer music in MP3 format from your computerto your phone using either the Nokia data cable or a device known as a bluetooth dongle, which is a small device that plugs into a USB connection on your computer (if it doesn’t already have built in bluetooth) that transfers files over the air to your phone.
